Streets Alive 2011 — Sixty Sails
Orillia Streets Alive! is pleased to present its 2011 project, Sixty Sails. This outdoor art exhibit, on display in downtown Orillia all summer, features 60 sailboat sculptures that showcase the work of local artists.
Artists whose designs were shortlisted by the Streets Alive! jury and then selected by sponsors transformed the eight-foot sail panels, made of lexan and supported on a hull of scrolled iron and a concrete pedestal, into personal works of art.
The sailboats were unveiled to the public at the Streets Alive! 2011 kickoff event on June 4. Streets Alive! artists were on hand to chat about their work. People’s Choice awards of $500 went to artists of the top designs as chosen by spectators that day: Brenda Slater, Laura Parna, Bernie Logan, Heather Hauck and Xavier Fernandes.
The sailboats now add colour and vibrancy to downtown Orillia and along the boardwalk of the Port of Orillia. The Sixty Sails exhibit is supported with a souvenir guide featuring a tour map, a profile and photo of each sailboat and artist, and sponsor information. It’s available for $2 from many merchants downtown, including Jack & Maddy – A Kids’ Store.
The project ends after the Thanksgiving weekend, when sailboats will be claimed by their sponsors. Sculptures sponsored by groups can be purchased throughout the exhibit — see the plaques in the boat hulls to see which are available. Proceeds support the Streets Alive! organization in its ongoing work to promote Orillia as a premiere destination for aficionados of outdoor art.
