Artist entry information

Step-by-step Leacock Chairs information for artists:
–  Artists must complete entry information and chair design on the forms provided.
–  Design submissions must be received at ODAC by 4 p.m. on December 21, 2011.
–  A jury will review all design entries.
–  Artists are required to pick up their chair in Orillia and return their finished chair to Orillia.
–  Artists of the chosen designs will be notified in early January 2012.
–  The chosen designs will then be available for sponsor selection.
–  The timeframe for artists to complete their Leacock Chairs will be approximately six weeks, with a deadline of June 15, 2012.
–  The finished chairs will be unveiled at the Streets Alive! kickoff event on June 23, 2012, where the public will begin to vote on their favourite chairs. Voting will continue until July 28, 2012, when five artists will win a total of $20,000 in People’s Choice prizes.

1.  Artists are asked to submit original and unique chair designs. Designs must be in colour and can be drawn, painted or copied and pasted on the form provided. The design should be a close representation of the image the artist intends to create on the chair. Artists must sign the disclaimer on the entry form.

2.  Logos or political, religious or sexual content are not permitted in the design.

3.  Leacock Chairs are meant to be sat on by visitors. Designs must ensure public safety (e.g., there must be no sharp protruding objects) and be vandal-proof and weatherproof.

5.  Deadline for design submission is 4 p.m. on December 21, 2011.

6.  Entries will be juried by a panel of at least three judges appointed by the Orillia Streets Alive! Committee. The judges’ selection will be based on:
– originality
– technique

7.  Decisions on acceptance are final.

8.  Successful applicants will be notified in early January 2011.

Technical information: The bulk of each chair is made of sheet metal, which will be primed. The front panel of each front leg is made of a faux wood (plastic) material, which will also be primed. Each armrest is a rectangular, metal, boxed compartment. The top of each armrest will have a see-through lexan panel that will allow the public to view inside.

The armrest compartments are an important component of the overall design. Artists may choose to:
–    create ‘shadow boxes’ with any variety of items inside the compartments (items will become the property of chair sponsors/owners)
–    paint, decoupage, tile or affix designs inside each compartment
–    do a combination of all of the above.

Once completed, the armrest compartments will be sealed shut.
